A person walks from Rugby to London in four days, and back in five days. Each day he walks one mile less than on the preceding day. What is the distance between the two places?
Answer 90 miles
This question appeared on a Scottish math exam from the year 1888. Were you able to figure it out as well as a 140-year-old Scotsman? By counting up mile possibilities and creating a pair of formulae for each trip, you will eventually solve that Rugby is 90 miles away from London in the problem. Cheers!
