A fedora, homburg or derby

Answer Hat

It's hard to imagine now, but not so long ago you would have been hard-pressed to find a hatless person out in public. While gangsters and movie stars of the 1920s to 1950s preferred the more casual fedora, Winston Churchill went for the taller, more formal Homburg. Regular, working-class folks, in contrast, adopted the derby hat (called bowler hat in England). The low-profile derby has a snug, hard crown that was originally designed to protect horse riders' heads at the races. But the style also worked well for cowboys, railroad workers and anyone else who wanted their cap to stay put.
