A construction worker with a thirst for adventure gets his wish when he's suddenly the focus of an interplanetary conspiracy and manhunt.

The movie is based on a Philip K. Dick short story called "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale". In the original story, the main character's last name is Quail, but it was changed to Quaid for the film. Many theorize this was to avoid confusion with the Vice President of the United States at the time: Dan Quayle.
