14,060-foot Mount Bierstadt is a good place to start climbing the "Fourteeners" of this western range
Answer The Rockies
The mountain was named in honor of Albert Bierstadt, the German American landscape painter who made the first recorded summit of the mountain in 1863. Bierstadt's celebrated paintings of America's western frontier made him a rich man. Shown here is his 1863 painting The Rocky Mountains, Lander's Peak, which was purchased in 1865 for the then-extraordinary sum of $25,000.
