There are 27 Constitutional amendments, and the first 10 are the Bill of Rights. They were written in 1777 and 1778 after debates over the Constitution's ratification. They specify individual rights and freedoms while also engendering a separation of powers amongst branches of government and between state and federal government.
Many of the concepts written in the Bill of Rights were inspired by earlier documents, including the Magna Carta, the English Bill of Rights, the Northwest Ordinance, and the Virginia Declaration of Rights.
