Maybe you've come across a UNESCO sign a time or two on your travels. UNESCO stands for the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization. Based in Paris, France, the agency's goal is "to contribute to the building of peace, the eradication of poverty, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, the sciences, culture, communication and information."
In doing so, the organization has created World Heritage Sites in order to promote international cooperation and to preserve natural and cultural heritage all over the globe. Many of these sites are world famous national parks, historical cities, or impressive landmarks worth protecting.
