A True Classic

If you google the term "classic TV", one series that invariably pops up is The Dick Van Dyke Show. The brainchild of legendary comedy writer Carl Reiner, the show was largely based on real people and stories from Reiner's own life. In fact, Rob Petrie (Dick Van Dyke's character) was originally intended to be played by Reiner himself!

You'd be hard-pressed to find a "Best TV Shows of All Time" list that didn't include The Dick Van Dyke Show. Given its impact on the medium, the show's run was surprisingly short — by design. Reiner made it known from the start that he would pull the plug when they were still on top. Smart move!

The Secret of Its Success

So, what explains The Dick Van Dyke Show's enduring popularity? Its leads, for one: Both Dick Van Dyke, already a Tony-award winning actor, and Mary Tyler Moore, who would go on to lead her own iconic TV show, would become two of America's most beloved comedic actors of all time.

But let's not forget the brilliant supporting players: Rob's wisecracking co-workers, played by vaudeville veterans Morey Amsterdam (as Buddy) and Rose Marie (as Sally). Their knee-slapping one-liners plus Van Dyke's masterful slapstick equaled a whole lot of yuks packed into one half-hour. But the show was about more than laughs; the scenes of Rob's home life and especially Moore's performance brought genuine heart to the show. And underlying it all, of course, was the brilliant writing of Reiner et al.

Toward the end of his life, Carl Reiner was asked what he was most proud of in his celebrated career. He responded: The Dick Van Dyke Show "hands down".
