Roadies are Cool, but They're Not Rock Stars

This one's about being a rock 'n roll roadie—a very cool career, but just to clear up any confusion: glamorous, it ain't. Many of us have the misconception that a roadie's existence is all about kickin' back with band, luxury travel, and plush accommodations. In reality, it's about working long, hard hours, interspersed with long, boring stretches, being away from friends and family, and living like a sardine on a cramped van or bus, sharing space (and a toilet, if you're lucky) with your fellow crew members. Not all of us can handle that kind of lifestyle, but the good news for those who can is that a career on a touring crew can be amazingly rewarding. Roadies get to help execute thrilling live events for thousands of people, experience the deep camaraderie that comes with people living and working together so closely, and travel the world—after all, you may not be hobnobbing with Drake in first class, but you're headed to the same destination.

Roadies Don't All Look Like Aging Members of Lynyrd Skynyrd

And they're not all men, either. And they do a lot more than just move heavy equipment around. And actually, today's roadies prefer being called "crew member", "technician", or by their specific job, such as "guitar tech". A touring crew is made up of multiple, often highly skilled, professionals: tour managers, lighting experts, sound technicians, engineers, caterers, instrument technicians, and more. Cheers to these hardworking folks who make spectacular concerts and events come to life!
