Jackie Coogan was arguably the first child actor to become a breakout star. Having started performing in his infancy — no, really — Coogan's roles in Charlie Chaplin's films 'A Day's Pleasure' (1919) and 'The Kid' (1921) made him a household name. His adorable mug graced dolls, stationery, whistles, and even peanut butter. He was a mega-star who earned millions as a child actor and, at 21, he found that his mother and stepfather had stolen and squandered most of his earnings. Oops. Almost penniless, Coogan turned to his old pal Chaplin for help, and then he promptly sued the pants off his greedy parents.

Oddly enough, Coogan's one of the lucky ones when it comes to child actors who break through and then break down. His lawsuit resulted in the California Child Actor's Bill of 1939, designed to protect child actors financially. Coogan continued working into adulthood, most notably as Uncle Fester on TV's 'The Addams Family'.
