Most people date Malachi around 420 BC. The Jews have left their exile in Babylon, returned to Jerusalem and rebuilt the temple. Other prophets have spoke to them but Malachi gets the privilege of the "last word."
The last book of the Old Testament is God's last word to Israel before he retreats into 400 years of silence. No other prophet will speak to the people on God's behalf until John the Baptist shows up around AD 28. Malachi's final words spoke loudly, echoing for hundreds of years while the people waited for a Messiah to come.
