Like baseball and apple pie, automobiles are an essential part of our national culture—so much so that we might sometimes forget that the rest of the world drives cars too. Sure, you know your Fusion from your Fiesta, but did you know that the Fusion is called Mondeo from the Latin word mundus (meaning world, appropriately)? Or how about the other direction? Many familiar imported cars on American roads go by completely different names elsewhere. In addition to regional trends, language differences account for many of these name changes —sometimes awkward differences, like the time Mazda tried to release its "Laputa" minivan in Spain, where "la puta" is a derogatory term for a prostitute.
