The beloved 1964 movie musical version of Mary Poppins is best described with a line spoken by the magical governess herself: It's practically perfect in every way. According to generations of movie audiences, that is. The book's author did not share the public's delight, to put it mildly (and allegedly shed tears at the premiere).

Walt Disney Himself Considered Mary Poppins His Crowning Achievement

After fighting tooth and nail for the movie rights to Mary Poppins (his daughter's favorite book), Disney poured unprecedented funds into the lavish production. With a budget estimated between four and six million dollars, it was the most expensive movie ever produced by the studio. Many a jaw dropped at the time, but Walt had the last laugh: the film has since grossed over $100 million, making it one of the most profitable movies of the decade.

Disney also cleaned up at the 1974 Oscars, earning eight nominations and five wins, including Best Actress for Julie Andrews (in her first film role) and two for the Sherman brothers' brilliant music (Best Score and Best Song for "Chim Chim Cher-ee").

Of course, you can say it backwards, which is dociousaliexpilisticfragicalirupus, but that’s going a bit too far, don’t you think?

Rivaled only perhaps by The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins contains a slew of unbelievably catchy songs that went on to become classics. In addition to those already mentioned, there's "Feed the Birds" (Walt's favorite), "Let's Go Fly a Kite", "A Spoonful of Sugar", and the list goes on.

Close your mouth please, Michael. We are not a codfish.

In addition to having an infectious soundtrack, beautiful period costumes and sets, and an overall joyful spirit, Mary Poppins is quirky and downright hilarious. And it isn't just Mary who gets the zingers — Bert is a veritable font of Borscht Belt yuks, like this one: The man said, ‘I’d like to replace your cat.’ And the lady said, ‘That’s all right with me, but how are you with catching mice?' Not to mention Dick Van Dyke's legendary slapstick.

Let's Go Fly a Kite!
