Grammar: a matter of life and death. Don't believe it? Consider these statements:

I like cooking my family and my pets.

We're going to learn to cut and paste kids!

Tables are for eating customers only.

See what I mean? Drop a punctuation mark at your (and your family's and pets') peril!

Ha, Ha. Seriously Though, Does Grammar Really Matter?

OK, the actual risk of physical injury from a grammar mistake is probably pretty low. (Hopefully someone would catch the error before any customer had been eaten.) But there are plenty of other reasons why you should care about grammar.

While it's true that today's technology tools like Grammarly make it easier to catch writing errors, these programs are not always available — and definitely not foolproof (for all the computer knows, you do like cooking your pets!) Plus, even if the likelihood of an error has diminished a bit, the impact has not: grammar mistakes make us look sloppy and, let's face it, dumb. A lack of grammatical proficiency impacts how others perceive us, which can have negative consequences both personally and professionally.

Ernest Hemingway: Write drunk, edit sober. Stephen King: Grammar is the pole you grab to get your thoughts up on their feet and walking. As Hemingway, King and the rest of the world's master wordsmiths know, grammar is an essential part of the craft of writing: it's the foundation that supports the author's creativity. Whether or not you're an aspiring writer, a secure grasp of grammar makes you a more confident communicator in both writing and speaking.

This Quiz Will Help You Master Some of the Most Commonly Bungled Grammar Rules!

Fancy yourself a Grammar Grump? A Comma Queen? Try this quiz and prove you're worthy of the title! A word of warning, though: some of the "rules" people have learned are just plain wrong. So, if you love nothing more than pointing out other people's grammar goofs, better be sure that you're right. If you're wrong, you're reinforcing grammatical fallacies, a serious linguistic crime known as hypercorrecting. And if you absolutely know you're right? Better consider the value of that friendship.

Or perhaps just hearing the word "grammar" makes you break out in hives. In that case, all the more reason to get these fundamentals down once and for all! And why stop there? Go check out all of our spelling and language quizzes!
