Ephesus was a big city, considered the second largest in the Roman empire at the time, after the capital of Rome. Big cities have lots of ideas and lots of corruption. It would be hard to change hearts in such a place. But the message Paul preached did.
The remains of a huge library in Ephesus reveal the intellect of the city, but the Gospel penetrated hearts and made a difference. Paul returned to Ephesus on his third trip and stayed there for 3 years.
